New Year's Eve abroad asks more of your phone than any other night of the year. Your ticket is on it, your route home is on it, the friends you are meeting are on it, and at exactly midnight you and everyone around you will try to use it at once. This year's searches show where people are heading. In HomeToGo's 2026 holiday report, all ten of the fastest-rising New Year's Eve destinations among American travellers are outside the US, led by Milan, Ischgl in the Austrian Alps and Punta del Este in Uruguay, with Edinburgh, Funchal, Prague and Rio on the list as well. This guide covers the big nights city by city: what needs a ticket, how the crowds and the transport work, why messages stall at midnight and what to do about it, and what to buy for a New Year trip.
Why your messages stall at midnight
At midnight, a crowd of hundreds of thousands sends greetings, photos and video in the same few minutes, and the mobile networks around it carry far more than usual. Operators plan for it. In Brazil, the data carried at the turn of the year can be several times an ordinary day's, and for the 2025 New Year Claro, TIM and Vivo all reinforced their networks along the coast, with Claro putting temporary antennas up at Copacabana.
Even with the extra capacity, the minutes just after midnight are the worst time to depend on your phone. A travel eSIM connects to the same local networks as everyone else in the crowd, so it shares the same busy moment. No plan, ours included, gets you out of that.
What helps is timing rather than a bigger plan. Send the messages that matter in the hour before midnight, film the fireworks and upload the clip later, and agree a meeting point and a time with your group before the countdown, so finding each other does not depend on a call getting through.
- Send the greetings that matter before midnight, or a while after it
- Film at midnight and upload once the crowd has thinned out
- Fix a meeting point and a time with your group in advance
- Have your ticket ready before you reach the gates
- Charge fully and carry a power bank, because the wait is hours, often in the cold
Where people are heading this year
HomeToGo compared searches made on its site between January and August 2026 for stays in the week leading up to each holiday with the same period in 2025. For New Year's Eve, the ten fastest-rising destinations were all outside the US: big cities, Alpine ski resorts and summer beaches in South America and Mexico.
For data, the list runs from our lowest prices to some of our dearest. Milan, Ischgl, Méribel, Edinburgh, Funchal, Prague and Salzburg all cost the same as each other at 1, 3, 5 and 10 GB. Rio costs 2.17 times that price for 5 GB, Puerto Vallarta 2.5 times and Punta del Este 3.67 times.
The rising list leaves out the classic big nights, London, Dubai, Sydney and New York, which come next.
- Milan, Italy: up 279%
- Ischgl, Austria: up 114%
- Punta del Este, Uruguay: up 87%
- Méribel, France: up 68%
- Edinburgh, Scotland: up 59%
- Funchal, Madeira: up 45%
- Prague, Czechia: up 24%
- Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: up 22%
- Salzburg, Austria: up 15%
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: up 13%
London: no ticket, no view from the river
London's fireworks over the Thames are a ticketed event. For 2026, the Mayor of London announced on 16 October that the first batch of tickets goes on sale at midday on Friday 23 October, sold only through Ticketmaster, the one authorised seller, with a smaller final batch later in the year. Tickets bought anywhere else are refused, and around 100,000 people are expected.
Without a ticket you cannot enter the viewing areas along the river, and last year Transport for London told people without one not to travel to the area around Victoria Embankment at all. Getting home is easier than on Christmas Day: in 2025 TfL kept its services running all night on New Year's Eve, apart from planned closures, although it warned that some stations could close at short notice to stop overcrowding.
New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027, is a bank holiday across the UK. For data, London costs the same as most of Europe, and for three nights the 3 GB or 5 GB month covers tickets, maps and messages with room to spare. Three days of unlimited costs a third more than the 5 GB month.
- Tickets: first batch from midday on 23 October, Ticketmaster only, with a smaller final batch later
- Around 100,000 people expected, and no entry to the viewing areas without a ticket
- The way home: TfL ran all night on New Year's Eve 2025, warning that some stations could close at busy moments
- 1 January 2027 is a bank holiday
Edinburgh: the Hogmanay street party
Edinburgh's Hogmanay is one of the few New Year celebrations people cross borders for: the organisers say the 2025 edition drew more than 115,000 people from 138 countries. The street party and the torchlight procession are ticketed, and early-bird tickets for the 2026 edition went on sale in January, through the official Edinburgh's Hogmanay website.
Scotland also gets an extra day off. As well as New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027, the 2 January bank holiday moves to Monday 4 January, because the 2nd falls on a Saturday.
Edinburgh uses the same UK plans as London. If you are coming on from a Christmas elsewhere in Europe, one Europe plan covers the UK as well, at the price of a single country up to 5 GB.
- Street party and torchlight procession: ticketed
- Scotland's bank holidays: Friday 1 January and Monday 4 January 2027
- Christmas elsewhere in Europe first: one Europe plan covers the UK too
Dubai: the Burj Khalifa countdown
Dubai's countdown at the Burj Khalifa runs on a tight transport plan, and the plan for 2026 has not been published yet. Last year's gives the shape. It closed the roads around the tower in stages from 4 pm, shut the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station to new passengers from 5 pm, or earlier if it filled, and ran the Red and Green metro lines non-stop for 43 hours, from 5 am on 31 December until midnight at the end of New Year's Day.
After the fireworks, the plan laid on free shuttle buses to taxi stands at the Al Wasl Club and Al Kifaf car parks, and the transport authority asked travellers to check their Nol card balance before setting out. The year before, more than 2.5 million passengers used public transport, shared transport and taxis during the celebrations, up 9.3% on the previous year.
Data in the UAE is dearer than in Europe, with 5 GB there priced at 2.67 times our European rate. A long weekend fits the 15-day 3 GB plan, which costs 0.56 times the 5 GB month and is plenty for tickets, maps and taxis. Three days of unlimited run to 1.56 times the 5 GB month.
- Roads around the Burj Khalifa closed in stages from 4 pm in 2025
- Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station: no entry from 5 pm, or earlier if full
- Red and Green lines: 43 hours non-stop over New Year 2026
- After the show: free shuttles to the taxi stands at Al Wasl Club and Al Kifaf
- Check your Nol card balance before you set out
Sydney: two shows over the harbour
Sydney sees in the year two hours after Auckland, with two shows over the harbour: an early display at 9 pm and the midnight fireworks. Last year, according to the City of Sydney, most vantage points were free and needed no ticket, its own four sites worked on a first come, first served basis, and some other vantage points were ticketed. Some sites are alcohol-free, so check the rules for the one you choose.
People claim their spots hours before the fireworks start, so expect a long wait and bring a power bank. Last year, at 11 pm, the crowd was asked to light up the harbour with their phone torches.
Sydney's midnight is 1 pm in London, 5 pm in Dubai and 8 am in New York, so the calls home happen during the day. Australian data costs what European data costs for any fixed plan up to 20 GB, but three days of unlimited there run to 2.67 times the 5 GB month, so a fixed plan is the better buy.
- Two shows: 9 pm and midnight
- Most vantage points free, first come first served, with some ticketed
- Some sites are alcohol-free
- Sydney's midnight: 1 pm in London, 5 pm in Dubai, 8 am in New York
Rio: 2.6 million people on Copacabana
Rio's New Year, the Réveillon, is the biggest in this guide by far. For the turn to 2026, the city's tourism authority counted more than 5.1 million people across 13 stages, 2.6 million of them on Copacabana for the fireworks.
That is the crowd Brazil's operators prepare for, and the reason they reinforce their networks along the beaches each year. Our Brazil plans run on Claro, TIM and Vivo, the same three networks, which helps but cannot beat the minute after midnight on a beach of 2.6 million people.
Carry only what you need on the beach and keep the phone in a front pocket. In Brazil, 5 GB is priced at 2.17 times the European rate, and three days of unlimited at 1.46 times that 5 GB month.
- Turn to 2026: 5.1 million people across 13 stages, 2.6 million on Copacabana
- Claro, TIM and Vivo reinforce their networks on the coast for the night
- Our Brazil plans use those same three networks
New York: Times Square
The Times Square ball drop has no tickets for the public viewing areas. For the 2025 New Year, around a million people came, the viewing areas opened at 3 pm, and entry was first come, first served through police checkpoints on Sixth and Eighth Avenues. Umbrellas were not allowed, and officials asked people to leave backpacks, alcohol, coolers and chairs at home.
That means a long, cold wait, often of many hours, so charge the phone fully before you go in. Getting home is straightforward: on New Year's Eve 2025 the subway added extra trains on a dozen lines into the hours after midnight, and New Year's Day ran on a Sunday schedule.
New York's midnight is 5 am in London and 9 am in Dubai. US data runs about a sixth above European prices at 5 GB, and three days of unlimited cost 1.86 times the 5 GB month.
- No tickets: entry first come, first served through checkpoints
- Viewing areas opened at 3 pm for the 2025 New Year
- No umbrellas, and leave backpacks, alcohol, coolers and chairs behind
- Subway: extra late trains on a dozen lines on New Year's Eve 2025
Madrid, Milan, Funchal and Prague
In Madrid, the tradition is to eat twelve grapes on the twelve chimes of the clock in the Puerta del Sol. Last year the square was capped at 15,000 people: it was cleared from 9 pm, then refilled through four streets, Alcalá, Carrera de San Jerónimo, Mayor and Arenal, until it was full, and Sol metro station was closed for getting on and off from 6 pm while trains carried on through.
Milan tops the rising list, but the city's 2026 arrangements are not out yet. Last year the authorities capped Piazza del Duomo at 4,500 people, with six entrances, and there was no traditional concert in the square, partly because of the preparations for the Winter Olympics.
Funchal's fireworks over the bay were recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest fireworks display in the world on New Year's Eve 2006, and the show still draws visitors to Madeira every year. Prague is the opposite case: the city has held no official fireworks in recent years, and it bans private ones in the centre, near the river, around hospitals and near the zoo, to protect animals and the historic areas.
All four cost the same for data at 1, 3, 5 and 10 GB, and a single Europe plan takes in any mix of them, priced like one country's plan up to 5 GB.
- Madrid: Puerta del Sol capped at 15,000 last year, Sol metro station closed from 6 pm
- Milan: Piazza del Duomo capped at 4,500 with six entrances last year
- Funchal: a record-setting display over the bay
- Prague: no official fireworks in recent years, and private ones banned in the centre
The plan for a New Year city break
Most New Year trips are short, three or four nights. Our data guide counts an ordinary day at around 700 MB, so three nights come to about 2 GB. The 3 GB month covers that, and the 5 GB leaves room for posting video from the night.
Unlimited for three days costs a different multiple of the 5 GB month in each country. In France, where Méribel is, it costs only a sixth more, the cheapest of any destination in this guide. In the UK it costs a third more, in Brazil and Uruguay about one and a half times, in the UAE 1.56 times, in Mexico 1.6 times, in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria and Czechia 1.67 times, in the US 1.86 times and in Australia 2.67 times. Unless you stream for hours, the fixed plan wins.
If Christmas is in one European country and New Year in another, one Europe plan covers both at the price of a single country up to 5 GB. Outside Europe, buy a plan for each country. Either way, buy before you travel: the plan's days only start counting once it connects at your destination, and it waits up to 180 days after purchase for that first connection.
- Three or four nights, normal use: the 3 GB month, or 5 GB with video
- Three days of unlimited: from a sixth more than 5 GB in France to 2.67 times in Australia
- Christmas and New Year in two European countries: one Europe plan
- Long-haul New Year: a plan for each country, bought before you fly
Frequently asked questions
Why do messages fail at midnight on New Year's Eve?
Because a whole crowd tries to send at once, and the local networks carry far more than usual in those minutes. Operators add temporary capacity for the biggest crowds, but the minutes just after midnight stay the busiest. Send important messages before midnight, upload videos later, and agree a meeting point in advance.
When do London New Year's Eve fireworks tickets go on sale for 2026?
The first batch goes on sale at midday on Friday 23 October 2026, only through Ticketmaster, the one authorised seller. A smaller final batch follows later in the year. Tickets bought anywhere else are refused, and around 100,000 people are expected.
Can I watch the London fireworks without a ticket?
Not from the official viewing areas along the Thames, which need a ticket to enter. Last year Transport for London advised people without a ticket not to travel to the area around Victoria Embankment at all.
Does the Tube run all night on New Year's Eve?
It did in 2025: TfL ran services all night on New Year's Eve, apart from planned closures, though it warned that some stations could close at short notice to prevent overcrowding. TfL confirms each year's plan in December.
Which metro station should I use for the Burj Khalifa fireworks?
Not the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, which last year stopped letting people in from 5 pm, or earlier once it filled. The transport authority pointed people to nearby stations instead, and the Red and Green lines ran non-stop for 43 hours over New Year. Plan to arrive early, because the roads around the tower close in stages from 4 pm.
Is Sydney New Year's Eve free?
Mostly. Last year the City of Sydney said most vantage points were free and needed no ticket, and its own four sites were first come, first served. Some other vantage points were ticketed, and some sites are alcohol-free, so check the rules for the spot you choose.
How many people go to Copacabana for New Year's Eve?
For the turn to 2026, the city's tourism authority counted 2.6 million people on Copacabana for the fireworks, and more than 5.1 million across all 13 of Rio's stages.
What time is Sydney's midnight in the UK?
1 pm on 31 December in London. It is 5 pm in Dubai and 8 am in New York. Dubai's own midnight is 8 pm in London, and New York's is 5 am on New Year's Day in London.
Is 3 GB enough for a New Year's Eve city break?
Yes, for most people. Three nights of normal use come to about 2 GB, so the 3 GB month is enough, and the 5 GB gives room to post video from the night. Spend more only if you stream for hours, and even then compare three days of unlimited, which in most countries costs well over the 5 GB price.
Is three days of unlimited worth it for New Year?
Rarely. It costs a sixth more than the 5 GB month in France, a third more in the UK, about one and a half times in Brazil and the UAE, 1.67 times in Spain or Italy and 2.67 times in Australia. A short trip of normal use fits inside a fixed plan.
Christmas in Germany, New Year in Edinburgh: one eSIM or two?
One. Germany and the UK are both on our cheapest Europe plans, which cost no more than a single country's plan at 1, 3 and 5 GB. Because the validity starts at the first connection, a 30-day plan opened at Christmas still has time left on New Year's Day.
Do I need a ticket for Times Square on New Year's Eve?
No. The public viewing areas have no tickets: entry is first come, first served through police checkpoints, and for the 2025 New Year the areas opened in the afternoon and filled with around a million people. Umbrellas are not allowed, and you will be standing for hours, so go with a full battery.
